Planning a Home Escape Drill

  Dear Mom and Dad:

I would like to make our home more fire safe for our entire family. All we have to do is plan and practice E.D.I.T.H. Here is how we go about it:
  1. Make sure there is a working smoke detector outside of each sleeping area.

  2. Sit down with our family and make a step-by-step plan for escaping a fire. We should draw a diagram of our home and plan two ways out of every room, especially bedrooms.

  3. We need to make sure everyone can unlock all locks and open all windows and doors quickly. If we must escape from a second story window, we should be sure to have a safe way to reach the ground. (Make special arrangements for small children and people with disabilities.)

  4. In case of fire, we don't stop for anything. We do not try to take possessions or pets. Just get out and call for the Fire Department from a neighbor's phone after we are out.

  5. Choose a "family meeting place!!! Everyone should gather at one meeting place outside, preferably at the front, where the Fire Department will arrive. Each family member should know how to call the 9-1-1 emergency number from a neighbor's home.

  6. We don't go back, now matter what! Everyone in the family knows they should
     "GET OUT AND STAY OUT"!
