The Downers Grove Fire Department
takes pride in the safety programs offered to all schools in the village.
Students carry the safety messages home to their parents and help us educate
adults about fire safety and injury prevention. Visit this page often
to see what our students are studying and about exciting contests we offer
as incentives to the programs. Don't forget to visit the Lesson Plan
icon to download copies of lesson plans.

Adopt A Firefighter Program - What is it?
A first grade classroom can adopt a Downers Grove Firefighter to teach the
class fire safety. The firefighter comes with his very own adoption
certificate. He will pay five visits to his classroom throughout the school
year. During his visits he will cover topics such as donning his gear so
children can see what a firefighter looks like in full turnout, Stop, Drop
and Roll, Crawl Low Under Smoke, Placing 9-1-1 emergency calls, Match and
Lighter Safety, Cool a Burn, and Get Out and Stay Out in case of fire. These
behaviors build on the lessons all Downers Grove preschoolers receive in
January, and creates a foundation for the lessons of the third grade Learn
Not to Burn Program. For more information about the Adopt
program, please call Marsha Giesler at 434-5986.
Public Information Officer Marsha Giesler, with
help from Firefighter/Paramedic John Bockrath, presents the annual "Learn Not
To Burn" program to the preschools
during the month of January. Come
